Aircraft Type and Background


RAF* Lockheed Hudson   /  AE489


* RAF aircraft being flown by an ATA (Air Transport Auxiliary) crew. The ATA consisted of civil pilots who ferried RAF aircraft to different locations, thus freeing up RAF combat pilots for front line duties.



Aircraft Type Designation: Light bomber / coastal reconnaissance aircraft.



The American-built Lockheed Hudson was an adaption for military purposes of the Lockheed 14 Super Electra civilian aircraft. The Super Electra was the type used by Howard Hughes on his round-the-world trip, and by the British prime minister Neville Chamberlain on his flight to meet Hitler at Munich in 1938.


The Hudson was fitted with two Wright radial piston engines. Depending on the variant, the aircraft could be equipped with two forward-facing machine guns, two in the dorsal turret, and the ability to carry a 1,000 - 1,400lb bomb load.


Normally, the Hudson carried a crew of four (pilot, navigator, bomb-aimer, and radio officer / gunner). However, on this occasion, the aircraft was being flown by two ATA ferry pilots alone.


The RAF intended the Hudson to be a replacement for the Avro Anson; and, initially, the Hudson was viewed as a fast and superior aircraft.


In addition to the RAF and USAAF, Hudsons were operated by the RCAF, RAAF and RNZAF.






Aircraft Accident Details


Lockheed Hudson AE489 was being flown by a civilian crew from the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) of Number 8 Ferry Pilots Pool (8 FPP). It is not known where the aircraft was heading. However, it flew into the ground in fog on Glenouther Moor, several kilometers north of Stewarton.


The aircraft was partly buried in the boggy ground. However, an engine was recovered later, and is now on display at Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum. (See photos below.)

Those who died were the following:

  • F/O Lee Leslie Garlow, Pilot, Air Transport Auxiliary.
    (Buried, Plot G, Row 6, Grave 5, Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridgeshire.)

  • 2nd Off. David Aaron Marks (32), Pilot, Air Transport Auxiliary.
    (Buried, Section FX, Row 7, Grave 235, Willeden Jewish Cemetery, Middlesex.)
